Recent Derby

Recent Derby

Danny Ngan took some great photos of the double header roller derby bout last Friday. Jet City Bombers vs. Arch Rival Roller Girls and Jet City B-52s vs. Rat City’s Grave Danger. Grave Danger invited a bunch of people to skate with them and I got to skate with Danger. It was a fun bout and I think we did pretty well given we were all getting to know each other as skaters.

The Write-a-Thon begins

The Write-a-Thon begins

Pulp-O-Mizer_write-a-thonEvery year I do the Clarion Write-a-thon for 6 weeks to raise money for a great writers’ workshop that changed my life. I use this as a time of creative renewal and mad experiments. Somewhat unconventionally I’ve used it to do lots of things beyond words. I’ve used it to challenge myself and push myself outside of my comfort zone. I’ve recorded songs (bloody terrifying that is), written love letters to inanimate objects (soothing, invigorating and an excuse to explore the history of cutlery), and most significantly it gave me permission and motivation to become a comics artist as well as a comics writer.

Things Without Arms and Without Legs (a comic about creatures who are kind) came out of this challenge and significant motivating factor in that fragile first year was to honor the contributions of sponsors.

This year I’m moving away from units of creative awesome into something that scares me and returns me to my roots. I’m going to try to write three short stories in six weeks. This goal scares me a little. Three short stories in 6 weeks. Am I mad? And yet that’s only half the output of the workshop (and the people in the workshop will be doing a lot more than writing stories).

During this time I will also maintain my webcomic’s update schedule and draw a comic dedicated to Keyan Bowes (one of last years sponsors, I’m so sorry Keyan! I wanted to do something really special so I kept procrastinating, it will happen soon, I promise!).

Since I decided to set myself this task I’ve felt ideas come to me. I love what a good challenge does for the brain. I think I’ll also use the medium of short stories to explore concepts and landscapes I will use in future novels… see, I am working on my novel by writing short stories, really and truly!!!

In past years I’ve given you the power. $20 and you could buy a unit of creative awesome and demand something of me. This year focusing inwards instead of outwards, but you’ll still be a motivating force. If failing to write a short story costs Clarion potential income I’ll feel like a pretty terrible person. Your pledges will push me onwards. I love how we can collaborate together!

Here is my writer page if you would like to sponsor me.

If you would like to join in the adventure and challenge of the write-a-thon it’s not too late. You can sign up here, just press the log in button and make sure you select the “Set up a Writer Profile Page.”

Augustus Clementine Resurrected

Augustus Clementine Resurrected

“Augustus Clementine was a less than ordinary roller skate.”

I’m pleased to announce that my short story, Augustus Clementine, will be in Resurrection House’s anthology XIII. To quote from the anthology’s call:

“Thirteen” is the first month of a new yearly cycle, wherein the old skins have been shed and the newborns are still learning to walk. “One” and “Three” make “Four,” which is the number of completion, of coming home, and of realizing the form that has been in process for some time. Nothing is true; everything is possible. And the more things change, the more they stay the same. The thirteenth Tarot card is Death, and he is the symbol of transformation and rebirth.”

I’ve never seen such a perfect call for one of my stories. It was as if the blurb was written for Augustus. Thank you Mark Teppo for choosing him.

The Law and the Heart

The Law and the Heart

20140602_The-Heart-and-the-Law-cover-3-800-93x150I had the honor of writing the introduction to Ken Schneyer’s short story collection “The Law and the Heart.”

I’m sad I’ve haven’t been able to write about it earlier, my website breaking had the worst timing! I attended Clarion Writers Workshop with Ken in 2009 and I believe he is the first of us to be nominated for a major award for original fiction (though a few of us have made long lists). Ken was nominated for a Nebula Award this year and getting to spend a bit of time with him was one of the highlights of Nebulas weekend.

If you like your social science fiction crunchy and thoughtful go check out his book, you won’t regret it.

It’s ALIVE!

It’s ALIVE!

My website has been down for WEEKS, but I’ve finally got my wordpress update to install cleanly (I think everyone updating their websites after Heartbleed kind of wrecked my provider). I’m now pulling together a new theme for my site as my old theme became unreadable under the new version. Don’t be surprised if things move around and feedback is always welcome. So much has happened while my website has been down, I don’t know how I’ll now what I’ve been up to! Most importantly a new story of mine is available to read for free over at Apex Magazine. Falling Leaves is set in a potential future Australia the fascinates me. I know this story is in the same setting as A Study in Flesh and Mind. I have a sneaking suspicion that my unusual shape shifters (Shadow Play and A Shape For Her) also exist in this world.

I love Apex Magazine’s cover art. It’s perfect for the issue and my story.
